If you think PR is as sexy as Samantha Jones from Sex and the City made it out to be, you’re in for a nasty surprise. 🤷♀️😂
She may have launched the swankiest hotels, promoted the hottest new clubs, and hung out with top celebs and the one percenters of the world, but the production crew forgot to show you the ‘real’ back office - not the stuff movies are made of.
The reality is we work long hours, most evenings and many weekends. To give you an idea, we put out client fires almost every day (and public holidays too); handle multiple media calls to convince them to use our clients’ stories; plan e-launches which try as you may aren’t very sexy; pack boxes for influencer product drops for social media campaigns; we create websites, TV ads, sales funnels, product branding and anything that requires a logo; we connect clients and markets; we’re always pitching something; we mostly skip lunch or eat in between calls; we brainstorm and research; and we find interesting facts and figures; industry researched statistics.
The reality is that PR is highly stressful, cutthroat, time consuming, and mentally and emotionally demanding.
The Marketing Communications industry is considered the most stressful job in the world. Seriously. Workers in this industry spend an average of 3.84 days per week stressed. Military and public safety rank fifth on the list with 3.35 stressful days per week. (If you don’t believe me, check out: https://bit.ly/3ijBrMO).
The reality is that not everyone is built for PR but if you have what it takes, it’s also the most satisfying career that you’ll ever have.
