𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐀 𝐓𝐈𝐏: Prepare a 30-second elevator pitch about the product or service that you’re marketing, then PICK UP THE PHONE and share your quick story with a relevant journalist or business editor.

Ask them if they would be interested in receiving your release.

A phone call trumps a cold email any day and yields far better results. Not only are you giving your media contact the opportunity to hear more about your story, but they can also refer you to a relevant colleague if they are not interested in your pitch.

The bonus: a telephone call allows you to establish a rapport with the media. Make notes of your conversations with them so that you can refer back to what their preferences are.

Then make sure you give them what they need going forward. That’s how mutually respectful PR/media relationships are built.
